Punjab: Arhtiyas, labourers to strike work from October 1 over fee hike

The Anaj Mandi Mazdoor Union has about 9 to 10 lakh labourers who work in 1,836 mandis of the state. The union has said that the charges for unloading, weighing and cleaning given to labourers have been too less for the past many years and demanded a one-time increase of 25%.

Vijay Kalra, who heads the Arhtiyas’ Association, says the dami (fee) given to arhtiyas must be fixed at 2.5% as was given in the past. (HT File)

CM Mann flags space crunch for foodgrain, writes to Centre

Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday sought personal intervention of the Union food and civil supplies minister for directing the Food Corporation of India to create sufficient space for delivery of rice so that procurement of paddy/rice in the kharif marketing season of 2024-25 is carried out seamlessly in the state.

Centre tweaks FCI funding, helping it to go debt free

FCI has long been resorting to external borrowings to maintain food reserves, fund its purchases of grains from farmers and redistribute them to 800 million beneficiaries free of cost

Depending on disposal of cereal stocks and various other costs, the FCI provides finance ministry with its financial requirement every week, based on which funds are released. (Reuters)

B’shahr grain black marketing: Senior officials under scanner

A senior government official said the state authorities had ordered probe into the role of other officers responsible for the black marketing . He said such a big fraud of black-marketing of 3000 quintals food grains could not be take place without the connivance of district level officials or perhaps it was sheer negligence on their part .
