Team India are back in action on domestic soil with a Test and T20I series against Bangladesh, beginning on September 19. India are coming off a successful T20 World Cup campaign in the West Indies, but had a lukewarm tour of Sri Lanka after struggling in the ODIs. Here are the details for the Bangladesh tour of India 2024.
India recent results
India enter the series after a victory in the T20I series in Sri Lanka, but a loss in the ODI series dampened the spirits in Gautam Gambhir’s first series in charge as coach of the Indian national team.
While India has seen plenty of white ball cricket in recent months, this will be their first Test match assignment since their 5-match series against England in March. India were dominant in home conditions against the English, winning that series 4-1, and are currently top of the World Test Championship table.
Bangladesh recent results
Bangladesh will be highly motivated and full of confidence after an extremely impressive 2-0 victory over Pakistan in their recently-concluded tour. They will travel to India with the red ball team in good form in subcontinental conditions, and are a constant threat when the ball spins with batters very comfortable in those scenarios.
On the limited overs front, Bangladesh made the super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup, but failed to impress at that stage, including a loss to India by 50 runs. Nevertheless, Bangladesh have a strong record in the format against India, with many quality performances. They will look to carry that momentum forward.
India vs Bangladesh head-to-head
The two-match Test series will be one where Bangladesh will be looking to grab their chances, never having registered a Test win over India before. In 13 Test matches, India have a very healthy lead in the head-to-head with 11 wins, and no losses, with only 2 draws.
Key players and matchups in the Bangladesh tour of India 2024
The Tigers and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto will be aware of India’s frailties when the ball is spinning, and will have Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan leading them on that front. An improving pace attack, including Hasan Mahmud who took a five-for against Pakistan, will play an important role.
Meanwhile, India will be led by Rohit Sharma and are unquestionable favourites with Virat Kohli marking his Test return after pulling out of the England series early this year. There is plenty of star power with the bat for India, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill supporting their senior teammates, and Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul marking their returns.
The hosts will have quality spinners of their own, With Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel all brilliant on home soil. They will want to get combinations right before the crucial Australia tour later this year.
