Wimbledon 2023 News Live

The tennis season's most prestigious tournament has returned to the hallowed lawns of Wimbledon. The Championships at Wimbledon are an event every year, standing out because of the all-white outfits, pristine green courts, and the influx of celebrities and stars to the famous Centre Court once the tournament reaches its final weekend.

For the players, it is the biggest trophy of them all: winning Wimbledon enshrines your name in the history books, more than any other grand slam title. Beyond that are the all-important ranking points Wimbledon has to offer, as players look to either consolidate or make the climb in the rankings entering the second half of the season.

Wimbledon being a ranked event this year signals a return to the normal. The All England Lawn Tennis Club's ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes after the invasion of Ukraine last year led to the ATP and WTA tours retracting the ranking points from the tournament. That means this year defending champions Novak Djokovic and Elena Rybakina won't be defending any points, giving the latter in particular to steal away the number one spot in the WTA rankings from Iga Swiatek.

The women's tournament is sure to enthrall, with the top 3 of Swiatek, Rybakina, and returning Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka all looking to add to their grand slam tallies and take hold of the number one spot that Swiatek has occupied since the retirement of Ash Barty last year. The Roland Garros champion's spot is under threat, with her best result at Wimbledon only being the fourth round – something she will look to correct. Sabalenka reached the semifinals in 2021, and now a more complete player with a grand slam in Australia under her belt, she will fancy her chances on a surface that supports her powerful strokes. Rybakina has shown her mettle on the grass before, and will look for a repeat of her 2022 run in which she announced herself at the biggest stage. Elsewhere, last year’s finalist Ons Jabeur, one of the most creative players in tennis, will look to do one better, while 2-time champions Petra Kvitova will look to make it 3.

On the men's side, it is Novak Djokovic's tournament to lose. The newly reinstated world number one has won both grand slam tournaments this year, and enters a tournament at which he has won on 6 of the last 8 occasions. The retirement of Roger Federer and the injuries of Rafael Nadal mean he carries the flag for his generation of greats – but Andy Murray, fresh off two grass court tournament victories, will be a dark horse to make a deep run at his home grand slam, where he won in 2013 and 2016. Young Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to take his crown at number one back from Djokovic, and if fit, Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios, if healthy, might be the great Serb’s biggest threat. However, his fitness is in question following his withdrawal from the Halle tournament, as is that of 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini, who might stand to miss a second consecutive Wimbledon.

In all, it promises to be a captivating tournament, full of thrills and memorable matches. There can never be any counting out of upsets in tennis, and at Wimbledon, every player brings out their best to claim the iconic trophies that lie waiting at the end. Wimbledon begins on July 3, and is sure to provide a fortnight of excellent tennis and incredible drama.
